NREGA Patshala!

Have we heard of NREGA school? Probably not! Or may be we all would be thinking what this NREGA school? Is it something under any education system or something else? No NREGA schools with local name as NREGA pathshala is an innovative concept of night schooling under JEEVIKA project in collaboration with PRI for the community members of Khalwa block villages ( Khandwa) to generate NREGA literacy amongst Korku tribes, so that they can avail work under NREGA and could sustain their live keeping NREGA work as an additional source of livelihood.

Why this is important? Amongst Korku tribes migration rate is quite high ( about 70 of total HHs) and in search of work they migrate to Maharastra and generally get wage labour work of INR 150-200 per day, one of the key reason for migration is after Kharif season they do not have any work and thus migrate. With PRI we are trying to generate awareness and literacy on NREGA so that they could avail the benefits of NREGA and get about INR 146 per day ( based on quantum of work). Why in night?NREGA Pathshala in night so that in day they can use their day to earn or get engaged in NREGA work and in night in free time they could learn about NREGA and its various practices.

What exactly we teach in NREGA Pathshala? •About NREGA ( job card formation, submission written application, NREGA wage rate, type of services available under NREGA, about NREG Act, type of work) •About community mobilization •About bank account opening and basic literacy clases that how read and write and see pass book entries.

Who takes classes? JEEVIKA KDSSS-Khanwa team, PRI members, some of the community members, progressive women and those who are working under NREGA.

Till date about 110 families have been benifited from NREGA pathshala in Khandwa through JEEVIKA effort! For more on NREGA pathshala and on Caritas India initiatives in Madhya Pradesh log on to www.jeevikacaritas.blogspot.com or www.caritasindia.org
